British India did not adopt the international standard time zones until 1905 when the meridian passing through Allahabad at 82.5º east (of Greenwich Meridian ) longitude was picked as the central meridian for India, corresponding to a single time zone for the country at 5 hours and 30 minutes in advance of GMT.

The local time at this Meridian has been accepted as the Indian Standard Time (IST) throughout the country because it passes through the middle of the country.

It has helped to avoid a lot of confusion which would have been there by following different local times or in absence of a uniform time.

IST = Indian Standard Time
------------------------------------------------------------------

The IST means the current time of India

-------------------------------------
Importance

:-

1) It helps if we don't have to know the accurate time of us then we can know it by using The IST

2) In airports and Railway stations, only the IST time is used, This should also help us.

3) correct time: if someone said that what is the current time of the other countries like Sri Lanka then we can say them this can we know by the increasing the 16 minutes to IST
