• Succession is the order of colonization of species in an ecosystem from a barren or demolished area of land. Mosses and lichens are the foremost species that inhabit an area. They make the area appropriate for the growth of larger species such as grasses, shrubs, and finally trees.
• A hydrosome is a plant succession that occurs in an area of freshwaters such as in oxbow lakes and kettle lakes. In time, an area of open freshwater will naturally dry out, ultimately turning into woodland. During this alteration, a range of different land types such as swamp and marsh will succeed each other.
