Diastole and systole are two phases of the cardiac cycle. They occur as the heart beats, pumping blood through a system of blood vessels that carry blood to every part of the body. Systole occurs when the heart contracts to pump blood out, and diastole occurs when the heart relaxes after contraction.

The heart is an organ of the body that supplies oxygen - rich blood to all the tissues and organs of the body. The heartbeat is caused when the heart muscles contract and relax. It comprises of two periods - diastole and systole. The period in which the heart muscle relaxes and refills blood is known as diastole. This period is followed by a period known as systole in which the heart vigorously contracts and pumps blood.
