1. In semi arid and arid region of rajasthan, almost all the houses traditionally had underground tankas for storing drinking water.

2. The tankas can be as large as big rooms.

3. The tankas are part of well developed roof-top rain water harvesting system.

4. The tankas were mainly built inside the main house or courtyard.

5. Tankas are connected to the sloping roofs of the houses through a pipe.


6. Rain falling on the rooftops would travel down the pipes and store in these underground TANKAS.

7. The first spell of the rainwater is usually not collected as this would clean the roofs and the pipes.

  • The tanks could be a large as a big room and were built inside the main house or the courtyard.

  • They are connected to the sloping roofs of the houses through a pipe. Rain falling on the rooftops would travel down the pipe ans was stored in these underground  Tanka.
