In this process, the roasted ore in the form of its oxide is mixed with carbon like coke and heated to a temperature above its melting point in a furnace when the oxides of the metal is reduced to the molten metal. Smelting is normally done for the extraction of metals like zinc, iron, lead and tin etc.

1.ZnO(s) + C(s) ----> Zn(s) + CO(g)

2.SnO_2(s) + C(s) ----> Sn(s) + 2CO(g)

3.PbO(s) + C(s) ----> Pb(s) + CO(g)
