Map scale refers to the relationship (or ratio) between the distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. The various ways of expressing map scale are :
1. Statement -in which 1cm represents the distance of xkm on the earth. eg. 1cm to 1km or 1cm to10km
2. Representative Fraction (RF)-the scale may be indicated as a fraction or ratio like 1:1000;this means 1unit of distance on map is equal to 1000unita of distance on ground.
I hope this will be helpful.
