What do you mean by this statement "society exists only where social beings behave toward one another in ways determined by their recognition of one another?"

Answer:

It means that every society is founded on a notion of the individual subject (person).

The idea of an individual may seem rather straightforward, but if you look into it, it’s a little bit strange, and varies according to place and time.

Like, our society assumes that an individual is an object with “rights.” They have a right to believe what they want, say what they want, go where they want, associate with whoever they want… Every person has these properties, and everyone recognizes these in each other. Otherwise they’d be breaking the law.

We also (more controversially) have the right to own property, and to transfer this property to other people in exchanges. We have the right to hire other people to work on this property without this property becoming theirs.
