Toxicity of micronutrients:
Moderate decrease of micronutrients causes deficiency symptoms and moderate increase causes toxicity.
Thus, there is narrow range of concentration at which the elements are optimum.
Any mineral ion concentration in plant that reduces the dry weight of tissue by about 10 percent is considered toxic.
Excess of an element may inhibit uptake of another element.
Manganese competes with iron and magnesium for uptake and with Mg for binding with enzymes. Mn also inhibits calcium translocation in shoot apex.
Thus, excess of Mn induces deficiencies of Fe, Mg and Ca that cause appearance of brown spots surrounded by chlorotic veins.
Hence, what appear as symptoms of Mn toxicity is actually the deficiency symptoms of Fe, Mg and Ca.
