what do you mean by umbra and penumbra

Umbra is the darkest part of a shadow and generally exists jn the middle darker part. While penumbra is the opposite. It is the not-so-shadowed part lying beside the umbra.

Umbra is the darkest part lying in middle of shadow wheras penumbra is the lighter dark shadow around the umbra
