In the context of a ring or a semigroup with an identity element, an element which has a multiplicative inverse in the ring or the semigroup. For example in the ring of all n×n matrices over a field, e.g. R or C, every matrix with a nonzero determinant is a unit.
But alternatively in mathematics a unit also means an identity element in an algebraic structure.
In physics, a unit is the standard way to express quantitative measurement.
