Wurtz reaction :-

Alkyl halides on treatment with sodium metal in dry ethernal (free from moisture) solution give higher alkanes. This reaction is known as Wurtz reaction.

example:-

C2H5Br + 2Na + BrC2H5 C2H5 - C2H5.
