What do you observe when
(a) CO, is passed through lime water first and then a little
in excess.
(b) HCl is passed through silver nitrate solution.
(c) H2S is passed through lead nitrate solution.
(d) Cl, is passed through potassium iodide (KI) solution.
(e) Cobalt chloride paper is introduced in water vapour.

Answer:

(a) When the gas is passed through lime water, it turns milky due to the formation of a white precipitate of calcium carbonate. The milkiness disappears when CO2 is passed in excess.

(b) because Silver nitrate reacts with hydrochloric acid to form thick curdy white precipitate of silver chloride whereas silver nitrate does not react with nitric acid.

(c)When H2S is passed through lead nitrate solution, the products are nitric acid and lead sulphide

(d) when chlorine is passed through potassium iodide solution containing chloroform, purple colour is observed.

(e)Cobalt chloride changes the colour in response to the humidity. As the humidity increases the cobalt chloride changes the colour from sky blue to the purple and then to the pink. On exposure to the water or the water vapours, the cobalt chloride absorbs the water molecule.
