Reaction between dilute hydrochloric acid and zinc

Observation

  • When dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is added to the test tube with zinc pieces, releases of the bubble are seen.
  • The zinc starts to produce a huge amount of small bubbles in no time.

Test of the gas:

  • The gas evolved must be collected in a test tube.
  • When a burning match stick is bought near the mouth of the test tube, it is put-off with popping sound.
  • This proves that the collected gas is hydrogen gas.

Use of hydrogen gas:

  • As it is very less in weight when compared to air, it is used in spaces.
  • It is used in the production of ammonia-based fertilizers.
