The following observations were made when high voltage is applied to discharge tube containing cathode and anode :-

  • When hight potential difference is applied not only cathode rays new rays are also produced
  • These rays moving from anode to cathode and passed through the holes of the cathode
  • These rays are called as canal rays as they passed through the canals of the cathode and also known as anode rays as they are originated from anode
  • The rays were earlier called as positive rays as they contained positively charged particles
