What do you observe when sodium sulfite reacts with dil hcl?

sodium sulphite = NaSO3

Na2SO3 + 2HCl —→ 2NaCl + H2SO3

sodium chloride and sulphurous acid are formed. however sulphurous acid decomposes:

H2SO3 —→ H2O + SO2

therefore the final products are NaCl, H2O, and SO2
