when magnesium ribbon is burnt a white dazzling flame comes out of it. Send magnesium ribbon is kept in the air oxygen from the air react with magnesium to form a layer of magnesium oxide. Hence sandpaper is rubbed before burning magnesium ribbon. hence magnesium is oxidized
