Character Sketch of George Polya:

George Polya was a famous mathematician from Hungary. He lived from 1887 - 1985. He was a professor of mathematics of many prestigious universities such as Stanford University and ETH Zurich. His was known as an excellent teacher who interest lied in pedagogical matter throughout his career. After retiring as a professor, he focused on publishing books.

Arguably, he is considered as the most influential mathematician of the 20th century. His research contributions include mathematical physics, probability theory, geometry, complex analysis and combinatorics.

Polya by Mikhail Zoschenko is story about an illiterate women named Polya who later learned to read and write. The story tells us that there is no such thing as ‘too late’ in learning about anything.

EXPLANATION:

• Polya was a woman who was innocent. She was intelligent and compassionate although she was illiterate. Therefore, instead of trying to help others to know the contents of the letter, she decided to learn to read and write. She was clever and resolute too. She told her husband she was loaded with frustration, and she decided to be a teacher. When she decided to learn, she learned well.  
• This shows her determination. She's was sensitive and this known from her reply when she saw her husband's letter. She really loved her husband. When she saw the note, she got upset and cried bitterly. She's also been creative and ambitious. By reading it herself, she wanted to know the contents of the letter. So she took efforts to learn to read as well as write. She was, in short, a nice typical wife of the village.
