2000 years ago, Europe, western Asia, the Middle East and Northern Africa were stable, politically, economically and even socially (on the epoch’s standards). And it may had continued that way for millennia if not for a demographic boost in Eastern Asia which set in motion successively waves of populations. The best of those, the warriors who survived, arrived in Europe and managed to destroy the establishment. Five hundred to one thousand years after, they realized they needed a base in the new world they created and their Asian roots weren’t enough to accomplish that.

So they eventually turned back to the Greek-Roman legacy, to their philosophy, scientific methods, Christian religion, law system.

And they borrowed lots of words from Greek and Latin to fill in the gaps of their own vocabulary.

In time, Greek and Latin became languages of prestige in the West, languages of science, law and religion.

Even in the East, where the Slavs managed to impose their language, they still had to borrow a lot of Greek and Latin words for the immediate social and political needs.

Latin and Greek were the official languages of the Roman Empire, but other languages were important regionally. Latin was the original language of the Romans and remained the language of imperial administration, legislation, and the military throughout the classical period.
