Answer:I don't think we could have avoided World War 2 unless some very dramatic things happened and I doubt would happen within the realm of international politics. World War One was a very big factor for the next war. It seems the peace after a war can be just as important if not more than the actual war. In World War One it was a combination of shifting power balance in Europe (Austria-Hungary was crumbling, "new" German state challenging status quo. As well a web of alliances between nations.), as well as hawkish officials in several nations, miscalculations, short-sightedness, and militarization. Even before this some seeds of resentment were sown in the Franco-Prussian war of 1871 with France getting #reckt and losing Alsace-Lorraine. Then the actual war of World War One caused extremely heavy casualties for the Allies (the Germans were much better organized and equipped) and this would have impacts later. During events of the First World War it really altered the face of Europe and this is not a cliche as that was how much of an impact World War one had on Europe and the world. Italy lost hundreds of thousands of men for very minimal gains and would lead to disenfranchisement with the allies who had promised great gains. Tsarist Russia had fallen and was to be replaced by the Bolshevik "Red" faction of the Russian Civil War. Germany was economically exhausted and the government in shambles. Britain had bled heavily and now had heavy debt. France had a part of the country war-torn and had lost over 1.5 million men ( they had demographic problems after the war, parents don't want their children to be cannon fodder) in the process of World War One and was in financial trouble as well. We can't forget about Austria-Hungary which was broken up to create several states, such as Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, czechoslovakia, and Poland. Russia had lost 1.7 million men and their government had fallen to be replaced by a much more distrusted communist government. All this combines to create vengeful allied nations like France and Britain, disillusioned ones like Italy, and destroyed nations like Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. The British and French wanted to pin the blame mostly on Germany even though they weren't the direct instigators unlike Austria-Hungary ( it was not malicious intent but otherwise miscalculations or delusions and desperation.) Allied nations wanted to get as much out of Germany as they could and were primarily motivated in the Treaty of Versailles to prevent another powerful and militaristic Germany by essentially tying their hands behind their back and beating them down. The war reparations in particular ruined Germany as a nation because they were already in war debt themselves and on top of that had to pay war reparations so their economy collapsed. The Germans lost faith in their country and it was a pretty depressing time. We don't know for sure if Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points of Peace had been followed we might have avoided WW2 but it would be better than the alternative I'm sure. Situations where people are desperate in a country and live in poverty are excellent breeding grounds for totalitarians. In desperate situations people will take any solutions they can get to ease their troubles and these dictators promise relief for them. At this point it is inevitable that there will be another war, vengeance is a strong emotion and a fast way to gain riches as a nation is take it from someone else. If we want to avoid future major wars it is important to create stable nations.
