What do you think is the “furniture” inside the guest house?
POEM : THE GUEST HOUSE
summary of this poem: The speaker in the poem uses an extended metaphor to describe each person and her/his
feelings. He compares each of us to a guest house and the emotions we feel to house-guests who arrive
every morning as unexpected visitors. Some guest-emotions, like joy, are welcome. Some others, like
misery and meanness may not be welcome but we should learn to welcome both positive and negative
feelings with equal warmth. Even if overwhelming sadness threatens to wreck us, we should accept it.
Who knows? It may be clearing our hearts to make place for a new level of maturity. Therefore, we must
welcome with warmth, every shameful or malicious thought that enters our mind, thankful that each of
them has been sent for our own good from a super power, to guide us to become better persons.
