Articles are written for a wide range of purposes. Off the top of my head I would include the following:

To Inform (“Thus and so is coming soon and will be a hardship unless you prepare” or “The latest Gallup research indicates that a majority of Americans are unhappy with their jobs.”)

To Instruct (“How to make the best crab cakes on earth”… or “How to prevent heart disease by changing your diet.”)

To Persuade (“Why you need to get informed and vote in the next election” or “Why going to the polls is a waste of time”)
