There can be many reasons. However following are the main reasons for sustained diversity in India much before the recorded history:

No concept of religion: Till the arrival of organized religions to the sub-continent, people were either subscribing to philosophies of their liking, or quit it or change it at will. Nature worshiping was also part of the options for urban, rural or forest dwellers; even nomads. This way of life, in general, was itself much diverse and numerous thoughts coexisted well.

The nomenclature ‘Indie’, ‘Hindu’ and ‘Hindustan’ etc. itself were coined from outside.

If you think the Tamizh-Aryan conspiracy theory was too much, look at this: Shaivaites feels it’s ok to consider themselves a distinct religion. There are hundreds of identities coexisting with each other. Kedarnath head priest gives boost to Lingayat demand - Times of India

India has probably been the only surviving civilization where theism, atheism and agnosticism could live together without fear

Arrival of newer ‘religions’ and their sects to the region and their amalgamation were quite natural

The climatic, linguistic, cultural, ethnic and other diversities have also played a major role in shaping up the people

Diversity involves the perception which accepts the uniqueness of each individual and accepting the individual variations. The reasons of diversity could be the variations among human in the forms of color, ethnicity, gender, physical bearings, socio-economic rank, generation, physical experiences, spiritual faiths, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

The reason for diversity is due to the following factors.

Culture. The history and culture of all states in India are very different and so as the habits of residents of that state. The way they cook the way the people dress and the language which people speak is very different. For example, Karimeen pollichathu is the main food of Kerala and Mirchi bada which is the famous food of Rajasthan is very distinct.

Festivals. India is rightly known as the land of festivals. Each community use to celebrate the festivals with great pomp and show which posses a unique identity. If Maharashtra celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi on large-scale on the other hand Punjab celebrates Lohdi on the grand scale which is the biggest example of diversity in India.
