Thank you ma'am by Langston Hughes:

  • In this story the boy tried to snatch the purse of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones to get money so that he can purchase blue  shoes.
  • But he was not successful in his attempt because when he tried to snatch the purse the strap broke with a single tug he gave from behind.
  • If the boy had tried to run away he would never have witness such change in his life. He did not expect such reaction from the lady from whom he tried to snatch the purse but failed in his attempt.
  • To his surprise, his plan back fired and he was under the clutches of the lady. The lady then took him to her apartment, his life transformed instantly.
  • He realized the act he has done and felt guilty for his action when the lady treated him with kindness rather than anger. He was given a second chance by the lady and by life itself.
