The Canterville Ghost is a short story by Oscar Wilde, originally published in two parts in February and March of 1887. It's one of the Irish writer's earliest works, telling the story of an American family who moves into a stately home haunted by a terribly unpleasant dead nobleman. While they start off believing ghosts aren't really, they're quickly convinced otherwise.

The story mixes comedy and horror in equal measure, along with a healthy dose of poking fun at the ways of the Americans. Because it's currently in the public domain, we're able to share the full text of the story with you here.
