By being absolutely sure that it shouldn’t be proper.
Like sex, food is the one constant feature in our lives that always gives us pleasure, except when not done right; but there is no way to cook or present food in the propah way. There is only what it feels right.
Come to think of it—because there is no proper way, all of us have our own, unique and intimate relationship with food. Yet, many of us would take it for granted, either because we get used to good versions of it all the time, or contrarily, we don’t know good food and therefore anything becomes acceptable.
However, the parallels with sex end there, in that food is as powerful as sex in impacting people, and should be taken seriously; which is why, food reviews has their own genre and unique appeal.
While writing this, I’m remembering a particularly irksome Bengali food reviewer, whose food reviews in a leading Bengali daily were nothing short of soft porn; plus, I should make no bones about it, he was simply horrible in his write-ups, focusing less on food and more on his sexual fantasies around two female characters he had created.
