Cause:- 1. Annexation of Oudh (Present day Lucknow)- Many sepoys feared increase in taxes under East India Company rule.
2. Presence of missionaries :- A mass conversion plot was anticipated and rumored due to presence of number of missionaries.
3. General Service Enlistment Act of 25 July 1856-Out of the three  presidency armies: Bombay, Madras, and Bengal, the Bengal army recruited higher castes, mostly from the Awadh and Bihar regions.
Men of the Bengal Army had been exempted from overseas service. The Act required only new recruits to the Bengal Army to accept a commitment for general service. However, serving high-caste sepoys were fearful that it would be eventually extended to them.
4. To load the Enfield rifles sepoys had to bite the cartridge open to release the powder. The grease used on these cartridges was rumoured to include tallow derived from beef, which would be offensive to Hindus, and pork, which would be offensive to Muslims.

Area under influence of the Revolt: Rising from the cantonment of Meerut it affected only the upper Gangetic Plain and part of central India. This included present day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
Other states disapproved of this rebellion. Even Punjab provided army to contain the rebellion.
So, the idea of "INDIAN NATIONALISM" was termed to take root from this revolt,  FIFTY YEARS LATER. But this was not a nationalist revolt. Most like Rani of Jhansi, Bahadur Shah II, supported the rebellion for the cause of their own empires not that of the whole INDIA.

Reason for failure: Prevalence of the demand of Dominion status under the British Crown was one of them. Because of this many believed that British can help in the upliftment of the India, through better administration and trade etc. Because of this most of the status were not  party in 1857 revolt.

Aftermath:
- Transfer of control of India to British Crown from East India Company through Government of India Act 1858.
- Reorganization of army. Strict rules on ranks and rotation of the sepoys.
-Inception of ICS, to create elites to rule India better.

So, looking at the response in India, for the Revolt of 1857, it can not be taken as a national movement. But later it was enthusiastically quoted as the first Independence movement to inspire India against British Rule. Years later Rani of Jhansi,Mangal Pandey, Nana Saheb, Tatya Tope and others became symbol of nationalism. And thus this Poem by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan became instrument of heroic sentiment in early twentieth century...
