what do you think the sepoys refused to go to Burma in 1824

In 1824, the Sepoys were ordered to go to Buma crossing the sea to fight for East India Company. The sepoys refused to it as they believed if the cross the sea or “Kalapani” they will lose their caste and religion. They also believed that crossing seas is impure and bring bad luck.
