The old man would slip into the forgetfulness so often because of the things he faced in his life in jail.

Explanation:

The Shoemaker is a part of the novel 'A Tale of Two Cities' written by Charles Dickens. The story is about an old shoemaker and his daughter. The old man spend most of his life in imprisonment which led him to fall into forgetfulness.

The old man has spent eighteen years of his life in prison desolated from the outside world. Which led him to lose his sense of time,  place, and self. This can be seen when the old man is still engaged in shoe making business, even though he is out of prison.
