Some of the causes may have been the weather, their settlements areas ( ex, close to shore of farther inland- like the woods) and the American Indians that they lived near. Their culture, crops, and instructions were passed on to the settlers and since different tribes were helping or warring with different settlements- well soon enough two settlements might look completely different from each other. And the effects of this were that while some settlements were florishing others were starving, which meant that the starving settlement would have to do business or move into another settlement.
