Answer:In many millions of years, the Earth will be uninhabitable as we know it because it will be too hot for liquid water to exist over most of the surface. That’s what would happen if, instead of waiting, we took matters into our own hands and moved the Earth to a smaller orbit.
Instead, assuming humans even exist in a million years and that we have greatly expanded our powers, we would be moving the Earth farther from the Sun to avoid being baked.
Eventually, in maybe four or five billion years, the Sun will have used up its hydrogen fuel and will expand to a red giant that is roughly the size of the Earth’s orbit. Good bye Earth unless we move our planet even farther from the Sun.
Of course, this is all silliness today. We don’t know that humans will be around for another 100,000 years (or whatever is the latest estimate of our time on Earth). At the rate we’re figuring out the mysteries of science and medicine, we’ll either self-destruct or be capable of all sorts of amazing things.
The scenario of self-destruction is always conceivable given the propensity for a minority of our population to exhibit such incredible greed and thirst for power that they don’t care about anything else. When you add to that the gullibility of a vast majority of the population, it’s a recipe for the end of the human race. From my perspective, the solution is education — lots and lots of it and of a high quality that emphasizes thinking, especially critical thinking. If a sufficient number of people had that sort of education, it would cut off those would-be despots at the knees and save our world. This is why I am spending my remaining years dedicated to do what I can to see this expansion and improvement of education. This forum helps in its own small way
