this experiment is known as rutherford's experiment.in this experiment the alpha particles will come backwith high velocity.by this we understood that nucleus is present.so,this was the disovery of neuleus

as you know, Alpha - particle scattering experiment is given by Rutherford using gold foil. he observes that mass of atom remains in the centre of atom e.g.., nucleus. nucleus is part of an atom where mass density is so high.
and nucleus contains positive charge.

If alpha - particle scattering experiment is carried out using a foil of any metal as thin as gold foil used by Rutherford. There would not change in observations if we take heavy metal like gold , silver , platinum etc..
but if we take light metal like lithium , alpha particles will push the nucleus and may not deflected back.
