The ascent of sap in the xylem tissue of plants is the upward movement of water and minerals from the root to the crown.Xylem is a complex tissue consisting of living and non-living cells. The conducting cells in Xylem are typically non-living and include,in various groups of plants, vessel members and tracheids.
Hope it helps.......

Ascent of sap is a process through which water and other nutrients are transported from the root of the plants to the various parts of a plant. 'Ascent of sap' takes place through the xylem.

EXPLANATION:

Xylem is a complex plant tissue that consists of living as well as non-living cells. A simple experiment to show that xylem is the path of sap in plants can be done by cutting the shots of two woody stems.

In one shoot, xylem is blocked with 'wax' whereas in other, phloem is blocked with 'wax'. These cut shoots are submerged in water. After sometime, it is seen that the shoot for which the phloem is blocked is the same whereas the one in which the xylem is blocked wilts. This is because, blocking the xylem blocks the sap path and water cannot be transported to the various parts of the plant.
