Buckminsterfullerene is one type of fullerene. Fullerenes are made from carbon atoms joined together to make balls, 'cages' or tubes of carbon. The molecules of Buckminsterfullerene are spherical and are also known as 'buckyballs' – formula C60.

It is an allotrope of carbon containg clusters of 60 carbon atoms join together to form spherical molecules . There are 20 hexagonal and twelve pentagonal rings present in one molecule of fullerence.  They are neither hard nor soft. They are dark solid at room temperature.
