canyon is a deep cleft between cliff resulting from weathering and erosive activity of river over geologic timescales

in its upper course,a river erodes the valley bed more than the sides.the valley thus becomes deep and narrow with steep, wall like sides.such a valley is called gorge.Large gorges are called canyons.the grand canyon of the Colorado river in USA is a famous example of canyons.
