1. Colonial India had the following four basic features:

Firstly, colonialism was the complete but complex integration and enmeshing of India's economy and society with the world capitalist system carried out for a period of roughly 200 years in a subordinate or subservient position.

2. As a result of these military contests, the British East India Company established its dominance among the European trading companies within India. The French company was pushed to a corner and was confined primarily to Pondichéry

3. An Act of Parliament in 1858 transferred the power to govern from the East India Company to the British Crown.

While authority over India had previously been wielded by the Directors of the Company and the Board of Control, now this power was to be exercised by a Secretary of State for India aided by a Council.
