Fish also have an efficient transport system within the lamellae which maintains the concentration gradient across the lamellae. The arrangement of water flowing past the gills in the opposite direction to the blood (called countercurrent flow) means that they can extract oxygen at 3 times the rate a human can.

Every living organism in our planet needs oxygen for their respiratory procedures.

Similarly, fishes absorbs the oxygen which is induced in the water molecules.

For this underwater respiration, most of the fishes use their gills which is their main respiratory organ.

Through these gills, the water and blood perform a counter flow in the body of fish,in order to extract the oxygen from the surrounding's water.
