Domestic violence is the violence that takes place at home. The term is used to indicate the violence that women are subjected to, usually by the husband and the in-laws' side of the family.

Domestic violence is against the dignity of humans, not just women. Hitting someone and hurting them physically is against fundamental human rights. It amounts to a violation of the right to health and security. Not surprisingly, domestic violence is not just condemned in India, but internationally too.

Domestic violence violates the right to equality because it happens when women are not treated as equal to men, though the law clearly states that all citizens are equal. It is the result of a society that feels that men are superior to women and so have the right to control women and behave with them in any manner. This mentality makes men show their 'power' over women by hitting them for reasons like not bringing enough dowry (another low mentality issue) or for objecting to anything that men do (like drinking or smoking). The violence is meant to scare women so that they don't voice their thoughts and opinions. This further amounts to a violation of the freedom of expression, and so is also a way in which it is against human (and women's) dignity.
