With the introduction of 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act in 1992, the three tier system of Government came into existence and Gram Panchayats started working in India.

As the name suggest, Gram means rural or village area whereas Panchayats means decision by 5 member elected by the Gram Sabha of the particular village. Gram Panchayat is a form of Rural Government.

The constitution enshrined with Article 243 G made Gram panchayats mandate to prepare and implement the Gram panchayat development plan (GPDP).

Gram Panchayats has various roles to play in a Village. Some of them are:-

  • Providing Primary Education
  • Establish and run Cooperative Societies
  • Ensure quick and inexpensive justice
  • Construction and repair of roads, drains, bridges etc.

Gram Panchayats members were elected for a term of five years by the voting of all the people of 18 years of that particular area.

It ensures Governance at the grassroot level of India.
