Path function is something which cannot be plotted on thermodynamic property diagrams as points. It rather depends on path followed in a process .For example heat and work. Point functions are those which can be plotted on thermodynamic property diagrams like pressure , volume ,temperature, entropy ,enthalpy , etc.

Difference between path fucntion and point function is given below.

Explanation:

  • The value of a path function depends on the path followed by the thermodynamic process. It is independent of the initial and final states of the process.
  • An example of path function is work done in a thermodynamic process.
  • A Point function is a state function and its value depends on the final and initial states of the thermodynamic process.
  • It does not depend on the path followed.
  • Density, enthalpy, internal energy are example of point function.
