Main exam is the 1st level and those who qualify main can give the exam of advanced

Those who are preparing for IIT have to give their exam in two steps unlike medical exams.......
First they have to give mains test and if they manage to score cut-off marks then they ultimately gets eligible to give Advance exam....
Mains test is of NCERT level.........but for Advance test we have to solve questions from other high level books..........if you clear advance test u will become eligible to be a part of IIT
