N means normality, one normal of NaOH solution contains 23+16+1=40 grams

( gram molar mass) of NaOH therefore, N/10 equals 40/10=4 grams. So, add four grams of sodium hydroxide to one litre of water then the N/10 NaOH solution is prepared.

N/10 solution of NaOH is explained below:

  • In this solution of NaOH, N/10 is the normality of NaOH solution. N is the symbol to show normality.
  • Normality is the number of grams equivalent to solute present in 1 litre of solution.
  • Several grams equivalent is equal to the gram of solute divided by equivalent weight.
  • Equivalent weight is molecular weight divided by valency. so, the formula for normality is
  • \frac{gram \: equivaent}{volume \: of \: solution} .
  • N/10 of the solution means 0.1-gram equivalent or 4 gram NaOH is present in 1 litre of solution.
