HELLO THERE!
White light is polychromatic, i.e., it is a combination of seven different colours, namely, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
When white light is made to pass through a prism, it disperses into the seven constituent colours (since speeds of the seven colours are not same in glass prism, they scatter, the one having least speed deviates the most, and the one having most speed deviates the least).
When these seven separated colours are obtained on a screen, the band of colours are known as Spectrum of white light.
HOPE MY ANSWER IS SATISFACTORY...
Thanks!

means a band of seven colours.
This is caused because of refraction of white light, by change of medium.
