the goal of sustainable development is to meet the need of people without compromising the need for tomorrow. this means we cannot continue the using of current levels of resources as this will not leave enough for the future generation .England did this in the 17th and 18th centuries. England used to be mostly forested. They ran out of wood for fuel. Fortunately they developed coal.

Coal made the cities unlivable. Read about the pea soup fogs in London.

Nothing is sustainable forever.

Oil has somewhere between 25 and 50 years as an reasonably economic fuel for cars. Fossil fuels have a longer time as a source of electricity, but if we use them the way we have been using them, we will melt the ice caps and end up in a very different world. (May be too late already)

Non-breeder nuclear has a few hundred years fuel in the crust that we know about. With breeder reactors it can last thousands.

Ultimately the best source of power is the sun, either directly with solar power, or with wind turbines. (Sun makes the wind move.)

Materials: That vinyl siding you just sent to the dump? Where does the new siding come from? Natural gas wells. Eventually the gas runs out.

That aluminum can you chucked into the garbage? That aluminum comes from somewhere. And while aluminum is common, concentrated deposits are not.

Waste.
