What do you understand by terms acidity & basicity?
Answers
Bɑsicity of ɑn ɑcid is the number of hydrogen ions which cɑn be produced by one molecule of ɑcid. e.g. ɑcetic ɑcid is monobɑsic in nɑture ɑs it cɑn lose one proton or hydrogen ɑtom to form ɑcetɑte ion.
Describes the amount of acid in a substance. An acid is a chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water and forms salts by combining with certain metals. Acidity is measured on a scale called the pH scale. On this scale, a pH value of 7 is neutral, and a pH value of less than 7 to 0 shows increasing acidity.
A base is a substance that can accept hydrogen ions in water and can neutralize an acid. Basicity is measured on a scale called the pH scale. On this scale, a pH value of 7 is neutral, and a pH value of more than 7 to 14 shows increasing basicity.
