The Directive Principles are guidlines/instructions given by the constitution. The government at all levels are expected to frame their policies in accordance with these principles with an aim to achieve our national Goals and establish a welfare state in India.
Dr. B.R Ambedkar considered these guidlines as powerful instruments for transformation of India from a political democracy into an economic and social democracy.

Directive Principles in our constitution :
- They are the guidelines to the central and state governments of India, to be kept in mind while framing laws and policies.
- They empower the government
- Cannot be enforced by the court
- Promote the welfare of all
- Laws and policies have to be made based on these principles
- Cannot be suspended and have to continue being formulated and implemented.
- These principles are included in Part IV of the constitution.
- They are moral, value based principles that act as guidelines for governments while making policies.
They are classified into three categories :
