If we defined freedom as the absence of constraint, then any stone lying on the ground would be free. We could make the definition more exact by saying freedom is the absence of rules upon one’s behavior, but stones have no rules governing their behavior either, and even if we say that they do have rules, the same rules necessarily govern men too, and so they would destroy any possibility humans being free
