The meaning of the terms the following terms (a) new moon (b) full moon are as follows:

  • A new moon is the Moon when it is between Earth and the Sun. It is also known as the side of the Moon that is in shadow and faces Earth.
  • On the other hand, a full moon occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun, and thus the side is not in shadow.
  • The full moon is also the lunar phase when the Moon appears fully illuminated from Earth's perspective.
  • It generally occurs when the ecliptic longitudes of the Sun and Moon differ by 180 degrees.
  • However,  in astrological terms, the new Moon is the Moon which is joined with, the Sun. Here, the Moon reflects light from the Sun, it seems to have disappeared.
