Summary and Analysis of Beyond

  • Written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, poem Beyond tells the reader how the speaker is waiting for death with a smile in her face. She is not afraid to die and she is even anticipating how the ‘Land of the dead’ would look like.  
  • The speaker’s friends are the main reason why she wants to leave earth and go there. From the lines “And yet not strange, for it has grown to be; The home of those of whom I am so fond” expresses how eager the speaker is to meet her friends who have passed away.  
  • “I know, I feel those who've gone from here; Come near enough to touch my hand” these lines convey to us how death is about to swallow the speaker’s soul, yet, all she finds is peace and tranquillity in the space above.
