Accommodation is defined by MacIver as, 'a process in which man attains a sense of harmony with his environment'. Ogburn and Nimkoff say that, 'accommodation is a term used by sociologists to describe the adjustment of hostile individuals or groups'. According to Horton and Hunt, 'accommodation is a process of developing temporary working agreements between conflicting individuals or groups'.

Conflict is inevitable in a society. But life cannot go along smoothly if there is continuous conflict. So one needs to make some adjustments or accommodations.

Physical adjustment takes place through organic and structural modifications. Social adjustment is achieved by acquiring behaviour patterns which are more suitable to the society.

Lower animals adjust themselves to the environment through adaptation while man adjusts himself to the social environment through accommodation. Adaptation is a biological process while accommodation is a social process.
