Resources

Everything in our Environment, that can be used to satisfy our needs, which are:

  • Technologically accessible
  • Economically Feasible
  • Culturally acceptable

- can be termed as a 'Resource.'

Types of Resources:

  1. Natural Resources.
  2. Human Resources.
  • Structures and Institutions.
  • Quality and Quantity.

    3. Human-made Resources.

Importance of Resources:

  1. Rich Natural Resources of colonies were the main attractions for Foreign traders or invaders. With the help of Technological Development, Foreign traders and invaders could exploit resources of colonised regions.
  2. India has learnt from her past experiences that - Development in general and Resource Development in particular does not involve the availability of Resources.
  3. Resource Development involves:
  • Availability of Technology.
  • Quality of Human Resources.
  • Historical Experiences of the people.

Conservation of Resources:

Irrational consumption and over-utilisation of Resources leads to Socio-Economic and Environmental problems. Resource Conservation at various levels is important to overcome these problems:

  1. in 1987, Brundtland Commission Report extensively mentioned the necessity of Resource Conservation and advocated the concept of Sustainable Development for this purpose.
  2. Gandhiji voiced his concern about Resource Conservation when he said: "There is enough for everybody's need and not for anybody's greed."
  3. Gandhiji was against 'Mass Production" and wanted to replace it with "Production by the masses."
