Everything in our Environment, that can be used to satisfy our needs, which are:
- Technologically accessible
- Economically Feasible
- Culturally acceptable
- can be termed as a 'Resource.'
Types of Resources:
- Natural Resources.
- Human Resources.
- Structures and Institutions.
- Quality and Quantity.
3. Human-made Resources.
Importance of Resources:
- Rich Natural Resources of colonies were the main attractions for Foreign traders or invaders. With the help of Technological Development, Foreign traders and invaders could exploit resources of colonised regions.
- India has learnt from her past experiences that - Development in general and Resource Development in particular does not involve the availability of Resources.
- Resource Development involves:
- Availability of Technology.
- Quality of Human Resources.
- Historical Experiences of the people.
Conservation of Resources:
Irrational consumption and over-utilisation of Resources leads to Socio-Economic and Environmental problems. Resource Conservation at various levels is important to overcome these problems:
- in 1987, Brundtland Commission Report extensively mentioned the necessity of Resource Conservation and advocated the concept of Sustainable Development for this purpose.
- Gandhiji voiced his concern about Resource Conservation when he said: "There is enough for everybody's need and not for anybody's greed."
- Gandhiji was against 'Mass Production" and wanted to replace it with "Production by the masses."
